bee safari excursion
The Buds, the Birds, the Bugs and the Bees
A special Bee Festival adventure with Pemberton Discovery Tours and nature photographer Melissa Zappelli
Travel by 4WD from the towering karri forest through changing landscapes towards the coast, with stops around Lake Yeagarup, the dunes, coastal heath and the mouth of the Warren River. Along the way, look closely at what’s flowering, which insects are visiting the blooms, and the birds sharing these habitats. Melissa will bring a photographer’s eye to the journey, with time to pause, take photographs, ask questions and explore what nature is showing us on the day.
Who will enjoy it?
Nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, wildflower enthusiasts, families and anyone curious about bees, pollination and the connections between plants and wildlife. No specialist knowledge is needed, just an interest in exploring.
Why we do it
We want to help people get beyond the highway, spend time in the landscape and notice how its living parts connect. Bees are part of a much bigger story linking plants, insects, birds and the health of the places we all depend on. This special tour takes the Bee Festival conversation out into the Southern Forests, where those connections can be seen up close.

About Pemberton discovery tour
Pemberton Discovery Tours has been helping visitors explore the wild side of Pemberton for more than 25 years. Established by Graeme and Toni Dearle, the business specialises in small-group 4WD eco adventures through the forests, dunes, wetlands and coastline surrounding Pemberton in Western Australia’s Southern Forests. Their signature Beach & Forest Eco Adventure travels through several very different ecosystems, from towering karri forest through to coastal heath, the Yeagarup Dunes and the Southern Ocean. Along the way, guests learn about the landscape, local flora and fauna, seasonal changes and the natural processes shaping this remarkable part of the South West. For the Northcliffe Bee Festival, Pemberton Discovery Tours is collaborating with Melissa Zappelli to present a special Bee Safari focused on photography and the buds, the birds, the bugs and the bees. The experience will explore the connections between flowering plants, pollinators, insects and birdlife while travelling through the landscape in a small-group 4WD adventure. Pemberton Discovery Tours is Advanced Ecotourism Certified and has built its reputation around local knowledge, interpretation and giving visitors access to places that are otherwise difficult to reach. Their approach is simple: get people out into the landscape, help them notice what is happening around them, and let nature provide the surprises.
